With Fall just around the corner, one of the first things I think of is planting bulbs for spring flowers.  When I was a little girl my mother always had daffodils, tulips and irises in her garden.

Every fall she would plant the bulbs for those spring flower.

I can still remember them peeking up in the spring to let us know that winter was almost over and warmer weather was on its way.

Now that I have my own home, I also love to plant fall bulbs for beautiful spring flowers. Both of my children received a puppy as an early Christmas present last year.  Needless to say, when my tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths came up this year they were attacked by these small fuzzy chewers/diggers.  This fall I will have to be planting new bulbs so we can enjoy them this spring.

For those of you who have never planted bulbs for spring flowers before, don't let it scare you.  The reason you need to plant most bulbs in the fall is so that they can #1. Get established before winter's freezing weather sets in and #2. Get enough exposure to cool soil temperatures to be properly chilled.  So how do you know when to plant so that they get what they need? You must know the Hardiness Zone for where you live.

The map looks like this: (Click on the map to find you zone)

2012 version of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

The map splits the country into 11 zones based on the average minimum winter temperatures.

When planting your bulbs, be sure to read the directions on the package.  It will inform you of how far apart to plant them as well as how deep. You will also want to feed them. I checked out Fall gardening to find the perfect product to use to feed my bulbs. Scotts Miracle-Gro makes two great organic products that will help your bulbs be beautiful come spring. These products also only contain natural ingriedents that are safe for me and my family which is very important. Both of the products help with root growth as well as promoting beautiful blooms.

Of course, after deciding it was time to start thinking about planting those bulbs I popped over to Pinterest to find some ideas of what I could do with the flowers they produced. The first thing that came to mind was a beautiful spring center piece.
